While touring in Calgary, Alberto Manguel was struck by the way the book he was reading (Goethe's Elective Affinities) appeared to replicate the cultural turmoil of the planet where he was residing. Articles in the daily report would instantly be lit by a verse in the book; an extended representation would be motivated by just one term. He chose to maintain an archive of those occasions, developing A Reading Diary: an amount, and every month rereading a book of records, insights, thoughts of journey, of friends, of functions private and public, all elicited by his reading.
