Description

Born a slave to the area of St-Domingue—the child of an African mother she never knew and a white sailor who introduced her into bondage—ZaritÉ, referred to as TÉtÉ, endures a youth of violence and fear, finding comfort in the standard rhythms of African drums and in her exciting initiation into the secrets of voodoo. When thirty-year-old Toulouse Valmorain comes to the area in 1770, he finds that operating his father's planting is neither attractive or simple. When, eight years afterwards, he brings home a woman relationship also shows difficult. However it is his teenaged servant, TÉtÉ, upon whom Valmorain becomes many reliant, as their lives intertwine across four tumultuous years.
