"Thirty years ago my older brother, who was five years old during the time, was looking to get a study on birds written he'd had 3 months to create. 24 hours later it had been due. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at your kitchen table near to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the job ahead. Then my dad sat down beside him, put his arm around my  brother's neck, and said, 'Bird by bird, buddy.  Just get it bird by bird.'"
