London’s streets are known by William Monk such as the back of his palm. However the river Thames and its teeming docks—where wharf subjects and evening plunderers ply their trades—is unfamiliar place. Only Monk’s serious requirement for function persuades him to simply accept an assignment from transport magnate Clement Louvain, to research the theft of a shipment of African ivory from Louvain’s lately docked schooner, the Maude Idris. But why didn’t Louvain statement the theft straight to the Water Authorities?
