Description

It's 1942, and following a youth of suffering in Manchester, Maryann Bartholomew has generated a life of security and joy together with their kids and her husband Joel, operating the waterways on his narrowboat, the Esther Jane. However the back breaking work and continuous childbearing get their toll on Maryann, and the sad lack of her aged pal Nancy, followed closely by an additional maternity direct her to some determined act which almost costs her her life. The surfaces of her protection are divided when Fran endures a collision, and to keep consitently the ships operating, Maryann is pressured to permit Dot and Sylvia, two wartime volunteers, in to the solitude of the existence. And when she finds that someone keeps calling for her at Birminghamis Tyseley Wharf, the dim thoughts of her past start to overwhelm her existence.
