Description
Home-defined "scalawag" Brian Jacques (venerable writer of the favorite Redwall string) sets out to spook youthful visitors with six scary (but, obviously, not-too scary) stories, steeped in a mulligan stew of people fables, historical myths, and horror-movie fiends. The celebrity of the sextet is without a doubt Jacques' odd design--his diction, laughter, and unique brogue--which (in wording) should not provide young visitors too much difficulty, and frequently creates really-entertaining reading besides: "No, friend, I h'arrived too late. But I understands me rodents, mister. When the h'Oriental guy claims that is wot 'appened, then I'll again 'im h'all the way." Children, obviously, figure conspicuously in each tale, too--whether as protagonists or as additional scurrilous lasses and lads obtaining their well-deserved comeuppance.
