Fifteen-year-old Mia isn't just excited when she gets the news headlines that her parents are shipping her off to boarding-school. It's nothing like she did something that bad -- all she did was damage her father's vehicle and max out her step-mum's charge cards. So, off she goes, from Detroit to Bard Academy, an unique prep-school that treats struggling teen-agers having a healthy dosage of greater understanding and traditional control. But all isn't what it appears as of this academic start, and Mia and her friends quickly realize that the academics are now actually spirits, caught in limbo, a number of them well-known authors who died before their time, including Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, and Charlotte Bronte.
