Empress Catherine II brought Europe to Russia, and Russia to Europe, during her long and eventful reign (1762—96). She fostered the tradition of the Enlightenment and significantly broadened the enormous kingdom developed by Czar Ivan the Terrible, transferring the total amount of power in Europe eastward. Well-Known for her will to strength and for her dozen enthusiasts, Catherine was also a prolific and talented author. Proficient in French, Russian, and German, Catherine printed governmental concept, literature, comedies, operas, and background, while creating a large number of characters as she corresponded with Voltaire and other public figures.
