Attempting to help a woman in distress, World-War I nurse and accidental sleuth Bess Crawford discovers that no-good deed goes unpunished When battleground nurse Bess Crawford returns from Italy to get a well-received Holiday leave, she discovers a bruised and shivering woman huddled in the doorway of her London home. The woman has nowhere to show, and powered by way of a firm sense of responsibility, Bess takes her in. Once inside Bess’s level, the woman shows that the fight with her partner erupted into violence, however she really wants to reunite home—if Bess may move with her to Sussex. Recognizing the lady is experiencing a concussion, Bess provides up several important days of leave to visit with her.
