On the moonless night only months after September 11, 2001, an U.S. Special Forces group of Green Berets referred to as ODA 574 treated the hills of southern Afghanistan with a seemingly impossible goal: to foment a tribal revolt and pressure the Taliban to submit. Armed just with all the gear they might keep on their backs, surprisingly short intellect, and their competence of guerrilla combat, Chief Jason Amerine and his five men had no option but to trust their only friend, just a little-recognized Pashtun statesman called Hamid Karzai. Getting returned from exile, Karzai—on the work from the Taliban—was touring the country to boost a militia.
