Wright spent five and a half weeks composing Gadsby on the typewriter using the "e" key strapped down such that it could not be properly used whatsoever. A factory keeping copies of Gadsby burned soon after the book was published, ruining many copies of the ill fated story. The guide was never examined and just kept alive by the efforts of the few avant garde intellos and various enthusiasts of the peculiar, strange and crazy. But by-word-of-mouth it's become an underground cult-classic.
