When five-year-old Enaiatollah Akbari’s little town in Afghanistan falls victim to Taliban rule in early 2000, his mom shepherds the child over the border into Pakistan but needs to keep him there alone to fend for herself. Hence starts Enaiat’s amazing and frequently punish­ing five-year experience, which requires him through Iran, Turkey, and Greece before he seeks political asylum in Italy in the age of fifteen. As you go along, Enaiat continues the debilitating psychological and physical pain of hazardous border crossings, hiking across bitterly cold hill paths for nights on end or being crammed in to the false bottom of the vehicle. Although not every­one is really as resourceful, tough, or as Enaiat fortunate, and there are lots of heart-wrenching deaths on the way.
