In American purposely, Craig Ferguson provides a shifting and achingly hilarious memoir of living the American dream as he travels from the mean streets of Glasgow, Scotland, for the comedic guaranteed land of Hollywood. On the way he stumbles through many efforts to create his mark—as a punk-rock artist, a development worker, a bouncer, and, unfortunately, a contemporary dancer. Ferguson found comfort in alcohol and drugs, habits that ultimately resulted in an aborted suicide attempt, to reduce the pain of disappointment. (He neglected to complete it when somebody offered him a glass of sherry.) But his story includes a happy ending: in 1993, the washed-up Ferguson washed up within the Usa.
