Jointly with Schell's effective and gruff companion, they cruise easily through crisis, conning Ny's grieving wealthy with sophisticated, admirably staged séances -- until an impossible event changes anything. Quietly entreating the con-man for aid, while "communing with spirits," Schell views a picture of the small woman in a pane of glass.
