Like a small child Derrick paid attention to his grandpais scary stories of "The Ragman," a classic junk dealer and boogieman of types for the kids in the area who he said had followed him throughout his lifetime and stalked him in the depths of their own worst dreams. As delusions but being an alcohol ravaged with senility, his grandpa's tales were ignored. When years later, killing involves Derrick's little neighborhood, he and his closest friend Caleb-equally adolescent outcasts-realize that the monster is just a hobo dressed up in rags who rides the rails in and out-of-town when doing his crimes.
