The narrator of the superbly written, disturbing, and strongly complicated book may be the scion of the decayed aristocratic household in the further reaches of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire. In five emotionally fraught attacks, he revisits his earlier, from adolescence to middle-age, a period of time that coincides with the last-century’s ugliest decades.
