Description
Helen DeWitt's remarkable debut, The Final Samurai, centers around the connection between Sibylla, just one mother of demanding and bright intellect, and her boy, who, because of his mother's unique mindset to training, evolves right into a prodigy of learning. Ludo scans Homer in the initial Greek at 4 before moving forward to Hebrew, Japanese, Old Norse, and Inuit; learning sophisticated numerical methods (Fourier analysis and Laplace changes); and, whilst the name hints, forever viewing and examining Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, The Seven Samurai. However the one question that eludes a solution is that of the title of his father: Sibylla thinks the movie obliquely offers the male role-models that Ludois hereditary father can't, and will not be drawn to the question of paternal identification. The kid believes differently, however, and ultimately sets on a search, one which leads him beyond the certainties of acquired information in to the unpleasant and complicated world of grownups.
