He's drawn in by Kerin, since her boy Damaru is "skytouched a widow whose unusual methods are accepted, whenever a naked, amnesiac stranger is located outside a rural highland town." All skytouched are in a position to influence matter, and are examined by the Precious Child, the world is ruled by the living goddess who in the City of Light. Damaru will end up a Consort of the skymothers, the gods themselves, if he's found suitable. The stranger—nicknamed Sais—accompany and Kerin Damaru towards the Town, but he understands the world doesn't function the way in which everyone thinks it does, as his memory is recovered by Sais. They find the fate of the Consorts, as Kerin and Sais learn the real nature of the planet, a fate Kerin is going to do something to prevent her child from discussing.
