The planet blew out in 2001. Huge regions of that which was america rest beneath an umbrella of radioactive dirt and poisonous dust, a layer of damage attracted over a property of disaster. A lot of the East Coast hasbeen obliterated; the Southwest is just a property of flame; birth has been given by cities of smoldering ash to horrifically mutated life-forms. Such may be the Deathlands, heritage of global destruction.
