In his book Mainspring, River produced a massive fabric for storytelling with his hundred mile-high Equatorial Wall that keeps up the truly amazing Things of the Earth. Now in Escapement, he examines more of that territory. Paolina Barthes is just a young lady of outstanding mental capability – a wizard on the amount of Isaac Newton. But she's grown up in seclusion, in a tiny town of wreck survivors, on the Wall in the centre of the Atlantic Ocean. She knows little of the planet, but she knows that Britain rules it, and should be the house of individuals who hold the understanding that she so frantically wants. And so she sets off to create her way off the Wall, being unsure of that she'll provide her incredible, unschooled expertise for sorcery to the interest of these life-threatening groups who'd utilize or destroy her for it.
