Ellen O'Casey, an Irish Catholic immigrant, is fighting to aid her teen-age daughter, her troubled mother and himself. Performing in pubs during the night, and cleaning others's laundry in your day, Ellen is decided to create a better life for her family by conserving enough for the passage to Ny where in actuality the remainder of her extended family have previously emigrated. But Danny Donovan, an area gangster and the landlord of the cafes where Ellen performs, expects to create her his mistress. A widow in her late-20s, Ellen has declined to allow another guy in her life, least of all of the brutish Danny, whose advances she doggedly resists.
