One summer weekend in 1949--although not our 1949--the well-related "Farthing established", several upper-crust Language households, have a country escape. Lucy is just a small child in another of these households; her parents were both major figures in the team that overthrew Churchill and flexible peace with Herr Hitler eight decades before. Despite her parents' apparent disapproval, Lucy is committed--fortunately--into a London Jew. It had been thus a significant shock to Lucy when she and her partner Brian identified themselves invited to the escape.
