It is 1672 in Port-Royal, Jamaica. Steve Wayne, Manchester bricklayer's apprentice turned sailing, is returning in the bag of Panama together with his share of the loot (an awful 200 bits of eight) and a handle to return to bricklaying, because piracy gives so poorly. First, however, he's a responsibility: a letter must be delivered by him to a girl. The correspondence is from his deceased friend, Friend Thomas Blackstone, who had been a judge intriguer on the quest for Prince Rupert of the Rhine.
