Bernie Rhodenbarr is just a personable guy, a great friend, a passable poker player. His chosen occupation, however, mightn't sit well with some. Bernie is just a thief, a great one, efficiently raising belongings in the not-so-well-guarded homes of well-to-do New Yorkers such as for instance a modern-day Robin Hood. (Poor people, as Bernie will be the first to inform you, alas, have nothing worth taking.) However, heis not great; mistakes are occasionally made by him.
