Plutarch's Parallel Lives, published at the start of the 2nd century A.D., type an excellent social history of the old earth. They certainly were originally offered in a number of publications that offered a merchant account of one Greek and one Roman lifestyle, followed closely by a comparison of both: Theseus and Romulus, Alcibiades and Coriolanus, Demosthenes and Cicero, Demetrius and Antony. Plutarch was thinking about the people of his subjects and on the road their figures shaped their steps, leading them to tragedy or triumph. He was a moralist of the greatest order.
