In 1972 Lorene Cary, a vibrant, bold black teen from Philadelphia, was adopted in to the previously all-white, all-male environments of the elite St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, where she became a scholarship student in a "boot-camp" for potential National leaders.  Like worthwhile student, she was determined to succeed.  But Cary was also determined to achieve success without marketing out.  This incredibly honest and intelligent memoir explains the challenges and ambiguities of this dual part, by which declining calculus and earning a student selection might equally be construed as betrayals of 1's skin.  Black Snow is also a globally identifiable doc of the Ladyis adolescence; it's, as Houston Baker claims, "a trip into selfhood that resonates with sober expression, intellignet enthusiasm, and wondrous love."
