"Homer’s Journey isn't the only real edition of the tale. Mythic material was originally oral, and also community -- a myth could be told one way in one place and quite differently in another. I've drawn on material apart from the Journey, specifically for the facts of Penelope’s parentage, her early-life and marriage, and the scandalous rumors circulating about her. I’ve chosen to provide the telling of the story to Penelope and to the twelve hanged maids.
