The suburbs of Denver were no place to remain throughout a zombie episode, a whole lot worse the atomic fallout was producing the place completely uninhabitable. His buddies and Max needed seriously to get free from town quickly, before they joined the ranks of the living dead or even the simply trusted old fashioned dead. The four people had four children to maintain also, so that they packed up the minivan and headed east. Why east?
