In a celebration in Manhattan, Maggie Holloway -- among the fashion world's most successful photographers -- is delighted to be reunited with her beloved stepmother. A widow now, Nuala Moore is equally thrilled to see her long lost stepdaughter, and invites Maggie to invest a couple weeks at her home in Newport, Rhode Island. Nevertheless when Maggie arrives, she discovers Nuala killed, apparently with a thief. Heartbroken, Maggie is surprised to understand she'd learned Nuala's spectacular Victorian house,and terrified when she starts to believe that Nuala's death wasn't arbitrary, but section of a diabolical plan created with a complicated brain.
