So long as the folks of Pern could remember, the Holds had protected them from Thread, the deadly silver strands that fell from the air and ravaged the territory. As a swap for sanctuary in the huge stone fortresses, the folks tithed with their Lord Holders, who consequently reinforced the Weyrs, whose dragons were Pern's greatest weapon against Thread.But not everyone on Pern was section of that program of shared attention and safety, especially those who'd been rendered holdless as punishment for wrongdoing. And there have been some, like Jaygeis broker family, who merely preferred the freedom of the streets for the protection of the store. Others, like Aramina's family, had dropped their supports through cruelty and injustice.
