In the 1890s, youthful cocksure Theodore Roosevelt, decades prior to the White House, was appointed police commissioner of damaged, joy-loving Ny, subsequently teeming with 40,000 hookers, illegal casinos and all-night dancehalls. The Harvard-educated Roosevelt, having a zeal, attempted to eliminate the city’s crime and vice. He went head-to-head with Tammany Hall, required night rambles searching for derelict police, prohibited barroom drinking on Sundays and attempted to persuade 2 million New Yorkers to savor wholesome family-fun.  The town rebelled big style; to the front-page he was lampooned by cartoonists; their own political party abandoned him but Roosevelt never backed down.
