This novelette appeared in the March 1952 problem of GALAXY and may be the only function which Heinlein published especially for Horace Platinum, the publisher of GALAXY journal. (Heinlein’s novel THE PUPPET Experts had been serialized in the September through November 1951 problems of Universe but Platinum had simply obtained sequential privileges to some agreement novel which had been created for Scribner’s.) Heinlein never again appeared in Gold’s Universe. This novelette, occur a near-future just slightly not the same as the McCarthyite and politically threatening existing handles societal degeneration, ethnic malfunction in a cautious, documentary-style which becomes frightening. His passionately-connected prospects are psychologically impacting but never sentimentalized, the back ground of mayhem by which they enact their heartbreaking, drowning love, is moderately but intensely colored.
