Nephew of the semi literate peasant, Justinian I had been among the most intriguing of the Roman emperors. His leadership marked a booming of Byzantine tradition, and his productive building works produced such projects whilst the church of Hagia Sophia, which remains the 3rd largest church in Christendom.
