May 1695. Throughout a horse race at Edo Castle the principle of the shogun’s intelligence support, Ejima Senzaemon, dead as his horse gallops over the end line—the next in a recently available number of unexpected deaths of high ranking officers. Sano Ichiro is requested to research, despite his recent campaign to chamberlain and his new responsibilities whilst the shogun’s minute-in-command.Meanwhile, Sano’s wife, Reiko, is asked to go to the test of Yugao, an attractive young woman accused of stabbing her parents and brother to death.
