Asia, 1699: On a moonlit night on the upper frontier area of Ezogashima, a lady is working through the forest when an arrow hits her lifeless. Meanwhile, inside the town of Edo, the youthful boy of Sano Ichiro, the samurai investigator that has increased to power in the court, disappears throughout a moon-viewing event. When among Sano’s political opponents suggestions that the child was kidnapped—and might be in Ezogashima—he and his wife, Reiko, start a desperate quest to locate their son…only to learn that the neighborhood leader, Lord Matsumae, is keeping the whole land hostage for another offense: The killing of his mistress. Therefore a deal is struck by Sano: the mistress’s murder will be solved by him if Matsumae will reunite his boy and free the hostages.
