The Historic Roman community's hunger for gladiatorial fight hasn't been higher. The Emperor Domitian's enthusiasm for originality and variety within the industry has given rise to an extremely different type of soldier: the Gladiatrix. Sole survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Asia Minor, Lysandra discovers himself the home of Lucius Balbus, proprietor of the foremost Ludus for female gladiators in the Western Kingdom. Lysandra, an associate of an old Spartan sect of warrior priestesses, will not take her new position as a servant. Compelled to struggle for success, her life-threatening battle abilities get the affection of the crowds, the regard of Balbus. But Lysandrais Spartan satisfaction also makes her potent opponents: the vicious Numidian coach, Nastasen and chief of the Barbarian faction, and Sorina, Gladiatrix Prima.
