Description

Married for two decades to Edward Berry, Lyddie can be used towards the tests to be a whaler's spouse within the Cape Cod town of Satucket, Massachusetts—running their property himself during her husband's long absences at sea, coping with the day-to-day doubt that Edward only will not return. And when her worst fear is realized, she discovers himself doubly cursed. She's overcome by suffering, and her privileges and home are now actually officially in the fingers of her closest male relative: her childis overbearing partner, whom Lyddie can't follow. Lyddie chooses to challenge each customized and law for control of her future, but she quickly finds the buying price of her daring "battle" for individual independence to be heartbreakingly expensive.
