Description
In 1935, when Erma Morton, an attractive young lady with a teaching diploma, is charged with the killing of her father in a distant Va mountain neighborhood, the case becomes an underlying cause célèbre for the nationwide press. Eager for a case to displace the Lindbergh test within the public’s creativity, the writers descend on the mountain region intent on infusing their tales with stylish nearby colour: horse drawn trolleys, run-down shacks, kids in threadbare garments. They require stories of rural poverty to provide their Depression-time visitors individuals whom they could feel better than. The big wasn't deterred by the untruth of these cultural stereotypes -area journalists, but an area correspondent, Carl Jennings, addressing his first main account and fresh-out of university, reviews what he sees: a regular community and a defendant who's possibly responsible. This trip into a location and time summons up spirits in the reporters’ pasts: Carol Jernigan’s sojourn in Japan that ended in catastrophe, Tone Baker’s hardscrabble youth to the Iowa prairie, and Increased Hanelon’s fragile elegance, a guard for her impossible romance.
