Ana Shen has what her social studies instructor calls a “marvelously biracial, modern family” but what Ana merely calls a Chinese American father and an African American mom. And on eighth-grade school morning, that’s a formula for catastrophe. Both sets of grandparents have been in town to commemorate, and Ana’s closest friend has persuaded her to ask Jamie Tabata–the cutest child in school–for a house-cooked dinner. Today her family and Ana have four hours to organize a common recipes for lunch, and Nai Nai can’t and Grandmother Bright agree with something.
