When eight-year-old Bethany fulfills her six-year-old relative Reana Mae, it is the start of the kinship of misfits that preserves both from the bone-deep isolation. Each summer, Bethany and her family depart Indiana for West Virginia's Coal River Area. For Bethany's mom, the excursions really are an indication of the grinding poverty and coalmines of her youth, of the spot she'd wished to flee. But her caring relatives, and Bethanyis companionship with Reana Mae, keep them returning.
