It's four o'clock each morning and from the water-slick stoned streets of Montmartre seems a garishly dressed young lady. In the police station in the rue de la Rochefoucauld she demands that she's info of bad emergency - an hour or so later it is denied by then. It requires an attractive corpse and two raw stranglings to direct Maigret, aided with a lovelorn investigator, into an all-too-common underworld where he traces an eager eroticism to its inevitable conclusion.
