Using its dim enthusiastic background and stories, the wind-swept shores of Scotland are an archaeologist's dream. Verity Gray is delighted by the process of discovering an old Roman campground in a little Scottish town. But the moment she comes, she feeling danger in the atmosphere. Her odd chef, Peter Quinnell, has spent his lifetime trying to find the resting-place of the missing Ninth Roman Legion and is confident he is finally discovered it - not because of any scientific proof, but because an area child has 'observed' a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.
