In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-devoted Londoners excitedly popped their String publications, expecting the investigatoris next journey, simply to discover the impossible: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had murdered their idol down. Birmingham spiraled into mourning -- throngs carried black armbands in suffering -- and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin. Subsequently in 1901, just like suddenly as Conan Doyle had "killed" Holmes in "The Ultimate Problem," he resurrected him. Conan Doyle never described this unexpected change of heart, although the author kept detailed journals of his times and function.
