Description

This short-story concerns an old, secret organization called the Desk, and their pursuit of an artifact of amazing energy. At the very top but structural group -- including a methamphetamine abuser who can easily see in to the past, a murderous witch, a guy who assumes the forces of any beast he devours, and the living embodiment of humanityis bad -- criss cross the world (and different sides) to locate a Mug older and stronger than the Ultimate Goal (and actually nearer to God). Apocalypse, violence, and drugs abound within this small epic. First printed in innovative anthology Twenty Epics, and eventually reprinted in The Entire Year's Best Fantasy and Horror and The Mammoth Book of Severe Fantasy.
