Tomie's family begins creating their new home at 26 Fairmount Avenue in 1938, just like a storm strikes city, a hectic, crazy year beginning. Tomie has several activities all their own, including consuming chocolate together with his Nana Upstairs, simply to discover--the hard way--they have consumed chocolate herbal. When he discovers he will not learn how to read until first-grade he attempts to omit kindergarten. "I'm going to be back next year," he claims.
