From its name on, Sue Townsendis brief, totally enjoyable book is saturated in cracks slapstick and equally sly. The Coventry of the name is one Coventry Dakin, the book's narrator, and a passionate, intelligent, but extremely bored girlfriend and mom sustaining her boring husband and two almost-grown kids in suburban Midlands. Coventry also simply murdered her friend, an idiot called Gerald Monk who's been spreading awful (and false) rumors about her. Now she is on the lam, and Townsend, writer of the well-liked Adrian Mole number of publications, requires us along and out on a witty tour into London, where Coventry, now a broke fugitive, attempts safety with both lowest and highest degrees of British culture.
