MTV’s unique VJs provide a behind-the-scenes oral history of the first years of MTV, 1981 to 1987, when it had been overflowing, reshaping the tradition, and making “the MTV generation.” Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn (combined with the delayed T. T. Garcia) had front-row seats to some social revolution—and the hijinks of music superstars like Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Adam Ant. Their sides collided, obviously: John Cougar asked Nina to some late night “party” that turned out to be a seduction attempt.
