William Cody (1846—1917), a.k.a. Buffalo Bill, was the absolute most famous American of his era. A young child of the frontier Good Plains, Cody was famous as a Pony Express rider, prospector, trapper, Civil War soldier, skilled buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, cavalry scout, horseman, dime-novel hero, and actor. But Buffalo Bill’s best achievement was as impresario of the Wild-West show, the company of cowboys, Indians, Mexican vaqueros, and others, numbering in the thousands, with which he toured The United States and Europe for significantly more than three years.
