Robin was usually "walking off" (her mom's terms) to move away from the distress she felt inside her. It absolutely was not till Robin's dad found a permanent job in the McCurdy farm, as a migrant worker after 3 years, that Robin had a location to stroll to. A place to hide one's uncertainties and worries, as time passed the Velvet Space turned more and more of a destination for her--a place to see and desire, a place to rely on. The Velvet Room, first released in 1965, was a Junior Library Guild selection, and section of Scholastic Publications' Arrow Book Club.
